How to Find Your Keywords – The Quick and Painless Way

Lesson 1. Find your keywords that you will use to direct people to your website

Here is a quick overview of what you will need to do to find these keywords. Below the overview is a walk through example that you can follow to take you step by step.

Step 1 Choose 10 words or short phrases that you think would be good words for the main ideas of the site.

Step 2 Go to

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

This tool shows 3 important things

1. Local search volume for last month – This shows number of search queries matching each keyword result in the most recent month that there is data for. Locally in our country

2. Global monthly search volume This statistic applies to searches over a recent 12-month period-. Globally

3. Advertiser Competition – This column shows the number of advertisers bidding on each keyword relative to all keywords across Google. Important to find high searches with lower advertising numbers. (just look for an unfilled box.

Step 3 When one word is entered see how many searches people check using that exact phrase.

Step 4 Choose the top words

that is the keywords with the highest number of searches, but especially those where the competition for ad words is in the middle range meaning that may not have as much advertising bids. (This is explained in detail below.)

Step 5 Go through each of your words and make an outline showing best words under each main category keyword (seedword) that you come up with.

Okay, now here is an example of the 5 steps in action. Just follow along and then try to do this with your own words.

Here is an example for 2 seedwords (the words you chose in step 1) and the process to find the key words:

Let’s say you have a mobile dog washing business.

Step 1 Come up with 10 seed words or keywords to start with.

Eg of seedwords: Dog baths, mobile, groomer, at home,

As you can see “dog baths” gets 2,900 searches (hits) in April whereas “dog bath” gets 40,500 hits

Recommendation: use both because you can see that advertiser competition is not as high for the first and there is still room for more advertising on the second.

If you go down the list to the 4th item you can see that typing “mobile dog baths” in one phrase is a bad idea – “Not enough data” means no one is searching for that phrase.

So under seed word #1 let your outline look like this:

  • dog bath 40,500 40,500 – med competition
  • dog baths 2,900 5,400 – med high comp.

KEYWORDS

1. dog baths

  • dog bath 40,500 40,500 – med comp.
  • dog baths 2,900 5,400 – med high comp.

Now scroll down to the bottom of the list and you will see a list called Additional Keywords to Consider

Here is what you will see: There is a better word choice than dog bath – ” dog wash”.

So let’s add that to the list under the seed word #1.

Now your table should look like this:

KEYWORDS

1. dog baths

  • dog bath 40,500 40,500 – med comp.
  • dog baths 2,900 5,400 – med high comp.
  • dog wash 74, 000 74,000

Keep the additional keywords at the bottom so you can find them easily.

Step 2 Go back and do the same thing with all 10 of your seed words.

Step 3 Then take any new phrases that came up of interest in the Additional Keywords to Consider section and apply Step 1.

By the end of your keyword search your list should have an outline like this (Add your own content)

1. dog baths

  • dog bath 40,500 40,500 – med comp.
  • dog baths 2,900 5,400 – med high comp.
  • dog wash 74, 000 74,000 med high comp
  • mobile dog grooming 18,000 18,000 med high comp.

  • enter keyword

4.at home

Do this until you are satisfied that you have enough good keywords.

You may also have keywords that would be unique for only a certain page of your website -

such as selling dog shampoo online.

Then you would need to find some good keywords focused on that subject.
Now that you have your words do a little testing on your competitor’s sites and see if they have some keywords that you may have missed.

This is an example of a real site – if I were interested this would actually be a competitor. You will probably find out that you will be ahead of the game just by adding keywords to your site . Many websites have no clue about SEO.

Do you see any words you might want to add to your keywords? Maybe you also groom cats – that is a whole different list of possibilities. See if your competition has some good words that you might have missed, and follow the same steps above.
